Volvo 1800 clutch will not disengage when vehicle is running?

Advice on how to troubleshoot and/or repair.

Vehicle was parked for over three months while I was out of the country, when I returned in July, the clutch would not disengage when depressed, so I could not put it into gear.

1967 Volvo 1800s|||There could be multiple problems. First, this vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic clutch. There is a master cylinder on the firewall that supplies fluid to the slave cylinder on the clutch bell housing underneath. Check the master cylinder fluid level. Refill if required. Still no action? Then the system may have air in it which must be bled out. You can't bleed a hydraulic clutch system like you would a set of brakes. You need a hand vacuum pump to do it properly. Once all the air is bled and there is still no clutch action, the clutch disc might be frozen to the flywheel from the vehicle sitting for so long. The quick fix is to try to rock the car in gear to free up the disc. If that doesn't work, disassembly is necessary. My money is on air in the system.|||there is nothing mechanically wrong with your car [move the car into an open area] put the car in gear and while holding the clutch pedal down put it into 1st gear and start the engineTHE CAR WILL MOVE next floor and release the gas pedal in rapid bursts. the clutch disc that has rusted to the flywheel will break free of the rust and all things will be back to normal

good luck and do not attempt in close quarters or around people or livestock|||Being a 67 it is likely a "rod and lever" setup, so crawl underneatha nd just make sure that they rod an lever are actually connected, check for free play. If it is nothing simple like this, then you may not be able to tackle this yourself. Good luck.|||I have a better way to free up a frozen clutch....just put the car in gear with the engine OFF, then start the car and it will jump forward (yes of course you need a clear runway to do this, let's not be silly about it).

Definitely it could be a clutch disc stuck to the flywheel.

Does your clutch pedal feel softer or weaker than usual? Do you have fluid in the clutch master cylinder?

If the answers are NO and YES, you might have a frozen clutch.

The method I suggested is a bit barbaric but it works. I've done it a couple of times.

And once it's loose, that's all you have to do.

But by all means bleed out your hydraulic system before you go tearing the car apart.

Would a volvo s60 be expensive to insure for a new driver?

I have a good gpa, i'm a male, and want a car. Would a volvo s60 t5 be expensive to insure? What about a volvo s60R? Thanks in advance!|||For my 2000 Volvo V70 XC AWD (costs more because its 4wd) i pay around 500 for 6 months for full coverage. Its not too bad, its worth it considering how safe the car is. If its a 2001 or 2002, consider that these cars had transmission problems.|||Probably.

At what milage does the timing belt on a 2004 Volvo v70 xc need replacement?

we recently purchased a 2004 v70 xc from a HONDA dealer whose service dept couldn't answer the question. Our next resource will be a local Volvo dealer.|||That is correct. The dealer will know for sure. I am a dealer.

The timing belt needs to be changed at the 112500 maintenence schedule, no sooner.

Feel free to email me any other questions at rbulmer@gengras.com|||the dealer would know for sure......you could also check volvo's website......generally most timing belts should be replaced every 60,000-75,000 miles!!!!

Where to put water in the radiator for a 1990 Volvo 240 DL Station Wagon?

It's a 1990 Volvo 240 DL Station Wagon. I would like a picture of the engine (radiator) and someone to point out where to put the water in it. Thanks.|||there is a water coolant jug under the hood.........it is on the right hand front....which means passenger side in the US....

has hoses going form the coolant jug to the radiator so its pretty easy to find....

240 volvo radiators do NOT have standard radiator caps....

EDIT: 2nd to last picture its the biggest white/clear jug under the hood the one on top.........the other one is washer fluid and the one close to the firewall is break fluid since this is a right hand drive car...

My 1994 Volvo 940 stops running after a few minutes any one knows why?

My 1994 Volvo 940 cut off on my wife on her way home it took 4 starts for her to make it home.I have changed the spark plugs and checked the fuel pump and there is a steady flow of fuel .Usually it starts right back up but it stops after about 3-5 minutes.Sometimes it may take hours before it starts again.I would appreciate any help any one has to offer. My Volvo is non turbo.|||There may be a problem with the car's computer. If you are not getting a check engine light, then that may be the case. It could also be the fuel pump relay going bad and is switching off the fuel pump.|||Thats a simple one because its a volvo :) sounds like it could be an electrical fault with the distributor. GOODLUCK|||sounds like its a coil or another eletronic part when it gets hot it dies

Why does my 740 Volvo make clanking noises?

I have a 1988 Volvo that recently started making clanking noises from the passenger side under the hood. It is very loud and only happens when I decelerate or am at a stop. I have no idea what it is but it makes me really nervous.|||There could be several reasons for this, check to see that the battery is secured tightly. Open the bonnet and try to identify where the noise is coming from. It could be that the timing chain needs to be replaced however with out being able to say were the noise is coming from its difficult to say for sure.

Ja.|||Volvo is da **** bro......|||Well if it's not happening all the time then it's not terminal. Just turn the radio up. I'd start worrying when/if something falls off.....which is unlikely. It's an old car, these things are to be expected.

Cylinder heads don't "blow"|||cylinder head about to blow,,,?|||gearbox or clutch...|||It's a 1988 Volvo. What'd you expect?!|||It's the timing chain, some are self adjusting. take it to the garage, can be expesive if not dealt with. I.E. it will blow the top end of your engine up.

Does anyone know how to get to the taillight bulbs in a 2002 Volvo S60?

My wife's Volvo has a taillight bulb out and I don't want to pay the Volvo shop $100 an hour to replace the bulb. I don't see how the light comes off from the outside. Is it a matter of removing the inside panel in the trunk to get to the bulb assembly? Any assistance is appreciated.|||try accessing it from the inside. there should be a door like thing when you open the trunk. look on the backside of the taillight and check for a door or something. it should be there. also check the manual. it should tell you there as well. these things are usually easily done by yourself. no need for mechanic. good luck|||Look at the manual it should say what bulbs are needed and then go to a local pep boys or auto zone and purchase them

How can I get a duplicate key for a Volvo CX90 for less than $300?

Key duplicating places can't make one because it is an odd shape and has a microchip. And the Volvo dealer wants $300. Yikes!|||if it has a microchip then your only option is the dealer.|||You can't say the 'V' word under $300 and only a locksmith in a very large city would have sufficient call to buy the equipment, software, and tech subscriptions to program them. Therefore the dealer may be your only option.

Just for the record, GM doesn't sell chip keys for $16. They are more along the lines of $48 right now with the price expected to triple as dealerships are closed left and right over the next 12 months. Better hope your local locksmith can do chip keys.|||Depends on which key you get. I have an XC90 and the key fob is about $450 to replace, depending on which dealer I take it to. The "valet" key, the one with out the fob, is about $150-180 depending on the dealer. I bought the key, without having it programed for $25. All that does is open the doors, and turn on the accessories.

Ironically enough, a Porche Cheyenne's key fob is only $350 to replace. Go figure...|||Sorry but Volvo is the only place you can get your key made.

Usually it's around $160 (key+one hour of labor)

Call another dealer and see what they say..

Good luck.|||i think you have to go to the dealer D:

Where can I find an online source for 1990 volvo 740 v belt installation diagrams?

I have a v belt for my 1990 volvo 740 turbo. I am trying to find out where I can find an installation diagram that I can either download or print out for the v belt which goes to the alternator.|||Your particular Volvo belt for the alternator is simple and straight forward which doesn't necessarily require a diagram. There are 3 belts(not including the timing belt) in front of the engine. One for the a/c,one for the p/s and one for the water pump. The alternator belt is the easiest to replace cause it doesn't require removal of the other belts. However, replacing all 3 belts at the same time is recommended. The size of the p/s and the alternator belts are the same(11.9x1013) and the a/c belt is(13x975). You can probably find these sizes at local auto parts store. To make life easier would be going to an independent volvo shop...it's a fast moving parts so they must have in stock at all times. If the volvo shop doesn't sell loose new parts to u then never do business with them....believe me....but if your looking for used parts then that's a different story...why?...cause it's more lucrative.....and that they have a surplus of used parts that taking up space....like a liquidation sale or something.. I hope this info. helps and feel free to ask for additional questions that u have...Thanx!!!!!!!!!!|||http://www.popularmechanix.com

What comes to your mind when you hear of or see a Volvo?

What kind of image is Volvo presenting to you, the consumer? What do you think of the drivers of a Volvo?|||When I see older volvos I think the folks are anti-status seekers, more concerned with realible saftey than anything else.

When I see late model volvos I think the folks have more money than brains.|||Married couple with matching sweaters. Child in a car seat with juice spilt everywhere. While the chocolate lab eats away at the seat.|||What comes to mind are those boxy Station Wagons. The owners I always assumed are Leftists. I don't mean democrats, I mean full-blown socialism.

When Ford bought Volvo and changed the cars they just got lost in a sea of similar products. When they just made brick-like safey cars they had real image. They may not have been selling all that many, but at least they had more of a presence, and at least some people had a reason to buy one. Now they're just competing toe-to-toe with whatever's out there.|||Makes me wish I had my Volvo 240 back. When I bought it I was still learning to drive so my first priority was safety. I wanted as much as steel as possible between me and the thousands of pickups %26amp; SUVs on the road without resorting to buying some huge car like an old Cadillac. I had that car for 6 years with very few major problems.|||heard they are great...but once in a while when they break, they can be costly....it depends on how much the car is worth before AND after the repairs...|||KEY WORDS: Safety, no-nonsense, practicality - form over function. Not something that follows the latest trend.

Typical images of some Volvo buyers or drivers are that they tend folks who are environmentally conscious, like the outdoors, have higher than average levels of education. Stereotypical Birkenstock-wearing college professor. The cars are pretty popular in places like the Pacific Northwest (Portland has tons of them) and New England.

However, the more recent Volvos are less distinctive than the old 240 and 140 series cars, that the old Volvo loyalists swear by.|||safety. also... box car.|||I own a Volvo. I'm neither a leftist, socialist, teacher, or educator. I work in technical support and do not wear matching sweaters. I'm not even a democrat!

But, after driving this car, I will definitely buy another Volvo when it's time to get another car. It's comfortable, safe, dependable, and good on gas.|||Safety and a quality made vehicle.... they also look pretty nice these days too.|||I miss my Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon. It was the ultimate anti-status symbol, was extremely safe, handled very well, topped out about 130 or so, was easy to work on, could carry a bunch of people or 3 kegs of beer, and was very comfortable. It's probably the best car I've ever had (I've had 2 Grand Ams, a Grand Prix, and I currently have a Dodge Stratus and a Jeep Cherokee; the Jeep is the only thing that comes close to the Volvo).

When I see people in newer Volvos though, I see people that are just as inconsiderate as other luxury car drivers. It's as if Ford decided to take out the turn signals, just like Toyota did for Lexus, Nissan did for Infiniti, and Honda did for Acura (everyone already knows that Cadillacs, Lincolns, Benzes, Bimmers, Bentlys, and Rolls Royces never came with turn signals...j/k). All kidding aside, it seems that since Ford is starting to let Volvo do it's own thing again, that the soul of Volvo (safe, performance-minded cars) is coming back.

Now only if there were a C30R, S40R, V50R, C70R, S80R, and XC90R...maybe then everyone would take Volvo's idea of performance seriously. (For those that don't know, R is similar to BMW's M, Mercedes' AMG, Nissan's Nismo, Ford's SVT, Cadillac's V, or Chrysler's/Dodge's/Jeep's SRT designations - high performance, limited edition.)|||I think of a person who appreciates craftsmanship in a car. A person who is college educated and practical, that is either in the teaching profession or very family oriented. Safety comes to mind as well as performance minded enthusiast. The image presented is a person who is self confident, may be affluent and a life long Volvo owner. A very practical person, where common sense rules the day. Someone who recognizes value when they see it and appreciates that Volvo still builds it's cars like they used to; exceptionally well.|||well depends on the year of it. coz some are more rugged looking than others.

on the whole they look over cautious.|||The first thing I think of is 'Big Swedish women'|||safety

How much will it cost to replace two doors/door panels on a 2001 Volvo s60?

Somebody hit out Volvo on the Driver side in a parking lot, but they were evidently going fast because they caved in the Driver Side doors. Any ideas on what it will cost to fix this?|||A new door shell will cost around $700 new. Add at least double that much for labor to remove, paint, and replace. You're looking at somewhere between $2000 - $3000. That's if nothing inside the door was damaged. If any of the internal parts were broken or bent, it could cost more.|||a lot!

What kind of rims will fit my 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan?

I just bought a 1991 Volvo 240 sedan, and I am trying to find some black rims for it. I think it would look awesome with black rims, black paint job, and a roof rack. I don't know much at all about customizing cars. I only know how to give them the maintenence that keeps them running!! Thanks|||james H has the best answer, but you might want to hold off buying new rims for a couple of months.

Getting a new used car can be a great experience, but you could run into some expenses that you aren't expecting.

A fuel pump could go, you might run into trouble with the steering, struts or any number of things. Especially on a classic like the 240.

Don't mis-understand, the 240 is bulletproof, and I'm not speaking poorly about your decision, but only suggesting that every car has its own personality that will reveal itself through time.

Fancy black rims on a 240 might look like earrings on pig if you blow 5 to 700 dollars on a car that won't run.

Get to know the car first.

Check out www.brickboard.com a website for volvo freaks.|||Any good tire retailer can help you here. You have to get rims sized for your particular car, which means having enough clearance so the wheels don't rub on the brake calipers and the tires won't rub on the body/frame when cornering. Volvo wheels had the same bolt pattern from about 1971 all the way through the 240, 740 and 940 series. Ford wheels fit also but remember the clearances.|||Go to www.IPD.com ... they have all the parts you need. Because of the unique Offset on the 240. there is a VERY limited Choice of custom rims, but there are some that look great on IPD. just take them to any paint shop and ask for a "Black Powder Coat".

Also. You can search for other rims Online, with the specific Volvo Offset. 20mm anda 17 x 7.5" size. The actual size of the rim can vary as much as you want really... but don't go putting 20"s on it.. that is just Ridiculus..

What does the humming noise mean on my Volvo S40 2006 T5?

My Volvo recently started making a high pitched humming noise. Originally I though it was coming from the serpentine belt, but after further investigation I realized it wasn't. When I took of the oil cap it stopped. Not I think it may be a stuck breather vale some where. I don't know where they would be or how you would check it see if it is working properly. Could I be wrong and it be something with the turbo?|||It's time to take it to the shop.

What is an acceptable mileage on a 10 - 15 year old Volvo?

I may be buying a used car soon. Probably a Volvo and probably 10 - 15 years old. I know nothing about cars. What is an acceptable/good mileage on a 10 - 15 year old Volvo? This car would just be used for average everyday use.|||Average per year is around 14,000 miles.

So between 140,000 and 210,000 would be 100% perfectly normal mileage.|||15,000 miles a year is average. The nice thing about the Volvo is they are built to last so finding a high mileage Volvo isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Before you buy anything take the vehicle to a certified mechanic for a complete pre-purchase inspection. It could save you thousands of dollars in repair costs.|||Around 150,000-170,000

Nothing over 200,000|||anything over 175000 is too much for any used car

How can I replace the water pump and steering pump on my 1996 Volvo 960?

I have a 1996 Volvo 960, wagon. I need to replace the steering and water pump on my wagon, and I am wondering if any how can give me instructions on how to do so...|||the water pump on this car is driven by the timing belt so follow timing belt replacement procedures for this, keeping in mind that you should also replace the belt, idler pulley, tension pulley, and gas-tensioner at the same time.once there the pump is held by 7 bolts and replacement is straightforward[gasket surfaces must be perfectly clean and as this is an interference fit [valve bender] engine the timing belt procedure must critically be adhered too.

as for the power steering foamy fluid means one of two things,

either you have a leak in the system [pump, hoses, rack. causing the pump to cavatate due to low fluid or someone added a fluid that doesn't belong, requiring a flush of the system [once again if fluid was added there is probabley a leak somewhere]

if indeed the pump is found to be bad [very rare] after removing the serpintine belt tensioner the pump can be unbolted and removed.

good luck|||first its very unlikley that both woul dbe bad or go bad at same time water pump bad if its leaking cant miss that just look under front of car wil see it drip steering pumps rarely go bad so what im thiunking is you have a belt problem not two problems so are you sure they both bad at same time... either way just type into search box

If it was a Toyota with 90K miles, I wouldn't worry because my Toyota's have always lasted me into the 200K's. Are Volvo's equally reliable?

Thanks!|||Yes.

I'd say it's good for at least 200,000 k, as long as you take care of it.

"Standards of manufacture were exceptionally high - Volvo already had an enviable reputation for longevity (rivalled by only Rolls-Royce), and most of these original cars are, at a mere 20 years old, still running. Contemporary figures showed that over 70% of all the Volvos ever made were still in running order, a stunning figure at a time when the average life expectancy of a car was about ten years. Volvo's average was around twice that.

The early V6 engines are not well-loved these days. They are thirsty and not particularly reliable. To put this in context, they might only last 150-200,000 miles before the timing chain needs replacing. The four-cylinder engine is so tough that, properly maintained, there really is no known way of wearing it out."

Volvo exp 22+|||I used to be a Toyota/Honda man until my wife finally talked me into trying a Volvo. I will never go back! i recommend changing trans fluid on these cars every 30k miles and every 15 k miles if turbocharged and driven hard. if these things are done and other services kept up with there is no reason for these cars to not exceed 300k several of my customers already have done this and the cars still look and drive good also reread the candiesma letter it is sound advice.|||volvos are equally reliable as toyotas....if not MORE. i've seen volvos with 400,000 miles on them all original. they are VERY good quality cars.|||I think $11,000 is too high for six year old Volvo. Having said that, my experiences with Volvos since 1968 have been mostly good as far as reliability is concerned. They routinely go over 100K miles and a good number certainly reach 200K. I had one that traveled almost 400K and was still in great shape when I traded it. The last new Volvo I purchased was a '98. It was the worst car I ever had, bar none. Volvos have gotten as complicated as other cars and reliability has fallen because of this. They are prohibitively expensive to maintain unless you can do that yourself but that's unlikely in this day of specialized equipment and dealer-only software downloads.

If you want a newer Volvo do some research and I'm sure you can come up with a better deal. Incidentally, when I finally had enough of my '98 disappointment I bought a new Toyota and am very, very pleased. I still have a Volvo but it's a '66, easy to maintain and fun to drive.|||If it was an older Volvo I would say no problem, but the newer ones are rated horrible.Gave up mine when it reached 175,000 it was always maintained at a Volvo Dealer.|||Way too much money for an older car with 90,000 miles. If you want a Volvo, why not purchase a new one? You may pay more for it, but it will come with a new car warranty and you don't have to worry about what the original owner did to the car.

As a second choice, you may want to look for a certified used Volvo 2005-2006 for a few thousand $$ less.

If you get a bad Volvo, you'll hate it! They are expensive to repair and many mechanics don't understand the design and they damage the car.

If you purchase a Volvo, you will be getting one of the safest cars available.

Good luck.

Does this mean that I can connect 2 speakers per 1 channel?|||The 2/1 channel means that you can run the amp as a 2 channel, or bridge it into one. Technically yes you can run 2 your 2 factory speakers off of one channel, however here is the problem that you are going to run into, you will either loose fade or balance depending on which way you wire it.

How difficult is it to use the IPD kit to mount a Ford 5.0 Mustang V8 into a Volvo 240 series sedan?

I have read of a few instances of people that have done this plus IPD makes all the parts that allow for this, plus I asked a Volvo guy at a Volvo-only garage how they'd do this and he said the only thing you need besides the new engine is to replace the front springs with 240 station wagon spring to accomodate the weight of the bigger heavier engine.

I want to make the penultimate sleeper car and I figure what better car to catch people with their pants down so to speak would be a Volvo 240 sedan, plus I like how they look and drive anyway.|||I had a 240, loved that car.

http://www.swedishbricks.net/faq/engv8.h鈥?/a>|||I'd be very careful here. These V8 conversions, when done on a Volvo 740 (a bigger car than the 240), requires is some sheet metal modifications to accommodate the V8. I've included a link for you to reference to see what you're up against. The 240 engine bay is certainly more confined than the 740 so just beware that it might not be as simple as the "Volvo guy" said it was. It would be a fine setup though. I know it can be done because I have seen one Ford V8 conversion in a '78 Bertone, which is a 262 (V6 engine).

Why does Vacuum hose keep blowing off the break booster of my Volvo?

I have a 1985 Volvo 740 GLE non-turbo. Whenever I try and use the breaks when the car is cold the plastic connecter between the break booster and the vacuum hose blows of the booster. If I let the car warm up 1st before I drive it the hose doesn't blow off. Does anyone have any suggestions.|||It sounds like you have a blockage in the vacuum hose or connection to the engine intake system, or a 1- way valve in the hose, perhaps even in the connector to the BRAKE booster, that clears after a time, is all I can think of. This might explain it being blown off, the booster bucket would apply pressure to the connection when you push the BRAKE pedal, that normally has vacuum present.

If so, a thorough examination of the hose, connector, engine connector etc. should reveal the problem.

Just had another thought. How is your brake pedal height when you first apply the brakes when cold? Does it go abnormally low? Perhaps you have some air in the brake system or another problem, that allows the pedal to overtravel temporarily, and the bucket/ piston in the booster is actually hitting the connector out.

What are the procedures to to change the oil fluids on a Volvo S60 2002?|||Do you mean you'll be changing the oil yourself? If so, I have no idea.

I bought my 2002 S60 in early 2007 and have always taken it to the dealer for every *single* thing. I was lucky enough to get it off directly from the original owner who had leased the car.

This is my second Volvo and I strongly, strongly, strongly suggest that you always service at the dealership if you want your Volvo to last. Volvos are GREAT cars and last FOR FOREVER... but only if you service them with PROFESSIONALS.

Good luck, hope it goes well.

Is it true that Volvo drivers have changed to Toyota Camrys?

It seems that now the Volvo make very good cars that our "Volvo drivers", who we all know and love, have traded their old volvos in and now switched to driving Toyota Camrys. Have you noticed?|||VOLVO OWNERS ARE VERY LOYAL TO THERE CAR AND WILL INVEST ON NEEDED REPAIRS.AND I SEE MANY VOLVO'S ESPECIALLY THE OLDER MODELS LIKE THE 240,700,940 AND EARLY 850 MODELS GETS PASSED DOWN TO THE KIDS WHO START COLLEGE.OR JUST GOT THEIR DRIVER'S LICENSE.ANOTHER THEORY IS THAT THE TOYOTA IS THEIR SECOND CAR USE FOR COMMUTING CAUSE OF MUCH BETTER FUEL ECONOMY.|||That's pretty funny.

I just lost my last key w/ the remote and I'm using my spare without the remote. How much would it cost to get two of them made? Can I order them online and have volvo program them and cut them?|||Well if you go to a lock smith, I assume it would cost anywhere between $75-$125 per key...

Or take your VIN (vehicle identification number)to the dealership and they should be able to give you the exact key for your car.

my dad drives a volvo|||Unfortunately all Volvo drivers get tarred with the same brush no matter how good a driver they are. Motorcyclists in particular have hated Volvo drivers in the past due to the generic Volvo drivers' perceived "safety cocoon" which has, in certain cases, invited a certain oblivion to other road users and subsequently hospitalised bikers. Over the last 10 years much of this hatred from all road users has been transferred to 4x4 drivers for the same reason, i.e. the "I'm safe, stuff everybody else" attitude. White van man is at an advantage as a Transit T280 or bigger is one of the few vehicles (but there are 1 million Transits and similar on UK roads) that can intimidate Chelsea tractors, in some cases quite justifiably.|||I have had about 7 volvos, currently I drive a 95 940 2.3 Estate

I think because Volvos are safe and fairly expensive, there's a stereotype associated with that. I'd rather be a typical Volvo driver than a Corvette driver, to be honest. It's more my style, and I like the boxy look. :-)

They know from experience that the average fender-bender leaves them untouched while the other vehicle (so long as its not an artic!) is a write off! Frankly as a group they drive without consideration for other road users of any description. Now I know this is a generalisation and therefore not completely sound as a statement but only ONCE in the last 40 years have I seen a volvo driver acknowledge a courtesy from another driver! My 1998 Volvo S70 displays the outdoor temperature, but it is off anywhere from 5-25 degrees. How can I calibrate/recalibrate this feature so it is half-way useful?|||The only time the outside temperature reading is valid is when the car is moving. Because of the location of the sensors you will never get a good reading when the car is at rest or moving slowly. As far as I know there is no way to calibrate them. There are two sensors that read the temperature and you get the best guess of the reading.

What would cause my 1996 Volvo 850 non turbo to idle unevenly?

I own a 96 Volvo 850 non turbo when your driving it and giving it gas the engine runs at an even RPM but when idling the RPMs go up and down but rapidly short. I was wondering if maybe it the airflow mass meter?|||With my '94 940 (non-turbo B230fd engine /4 spd automatic w/ 134,686 miles), leaks in the exhaust system cause erratic idling. Actually, it's in the shop right now getting the exhaust manifold gasket replaced. In my case, it's either that lower 'back pressure' on the motor affects performance, or something that runs on vacuum or pressure (exhaust gas return circuit or ?) isn't getting what it needs due to the exhaust leak.

There are other causes, but this one is current for me, and easy enough for you to check... are there any visible holes/cracks/breaks in pipes or either muffler or the catalytic converter? Is it noisy? Do you feel puffs of exhaust under your car, or smell exhaust in the cabin or under the front of the car? It was also suggested to me that the catalytic converter might be plugged, but restriction hasn't seemed to affect idle that way in the past, for my Volvos anyway ('87 through '90 244 and 245s, B230f 4 spd autos). So, that gives you something simple to check. If you do find leaks in exhaust system, 'muffler tape' is an inexpensive and quick way to see if that's causing your idle problem... just tape up the holes thoroughly and see if the idle smooths out (but if you can't thoroughly cover the leak you won't know for sure). IF that did work, FIX the problem, as the metal tape won't last long at all. Keep your brick purring, man, and good luck. Hope it's a simple problem (always check those first). Just my two cents.|||It may be the MAF, they do fail, but you should have a check engine light on if that was the case.

It's more likely that there is a vacuum leak. Get a water spray bottle and spray a stream of water around the intake manifold and see if the idle speed changes. The gaskets often leak around #1 cylinder. Check the vacuum line that is right behind the power steering pump, it deteriorates and leaks too.|||most likley dirty fuel system

Points and cap are good, not sure about gas pump. the filter has little gas in it even when running. I pulled the rubber hose off carb and cranked but no gas. it aslso has a metal gas line to carb. ?|||Sounds like low fuel pressure. Can i use a volvo penta outdrive on a mercruiser engine?

I have a 1972 Starcraft with a 140 mercruiser and a pre alpha outdrive. Can i use a volvo penta outdrive on a mercruiser engine.||| After reading the answers so far, I can understand your confusion. In your exact case, my answer is don't. There are just to many problems, from the differences in the engines, and transom shield, to electrical. tilt and trim etc. Just to much. I love Volvo but I've also worked on OMC and Mercruser. It's easier to repair that you have. Good luck!|||Yes you can but you will need the Volvo Penta SX Outdrive as it has the same basic transom cut out as the Mercruiser. Since both use the chevy 151 cubic inch 4 cylinder the base engines are totally interchangeable

Take off the exhaust manifold bell housing and engine coupler what you have left is all you can usead far as the engine goes. Everything else that is painted Merc black will need to be replaced including what is left bolted to the Transom, with Volvo Penta SX components and including the engine mounted Raw water pump

It would be far cheaper to replace your old unit with one that is a direct bolt on.|||Sounds like you need the following:

Masters in Automotive or Marine Engineering

Production specs of both outdrive systems

Precision manufacturing CAD system.

Multi-million dollar manufacturing facility

Millions of dollars in development, production, and salary expenses.

So unless you have all of this and a few items I might have not mentioned, the answer is a big NO.

|||There is a company that makes an aftermarket replacement out-drives for Mercruiser. They advertise in all the boating magazines. I cannot remember their name now. Anyone know?|||Nope- You can not use your mercruiser engine on a volvo sterndrive. Volvo stern drives have no raw water pump built into them. Merc has a big pump on the input shaft to the lower unit.|||If you can figure out how to adapt a Volvo engine coupler to a Merc flywheel, sure. Is this some kind of science project?|||No. Find a new drive. They are out there.

How do I wire up heated seats from a 2001 Volvo?

I installed seats from a 2001 Volvo into my Jeep CJ5. They have heat panels in the bottoms and backs. Any ideas how to wire them without having the original dash buttons and harness? I'm afraid of burning up the wires and/or seats.|||At the very least you will need a switch to turn them on and off with. I would suggest buying a switch that is designed for heated seats (low and high settings). You definitely should install a fuse in the circuit to keep them from overheating.|||You'll need 12 volts for the high setting and approximately 9 volts for low. You're looking at a current draw of about 4 amps on low and 5 on high.

How do i disable a factory fitted alarm on my volvo as it seem to be draining the battery down?

Volvo may be able to do it for you but will not be very helpful.

Are you sure that the problem is alarm related. The alarm will operate when the battery voltage drops below a certain level. It is a regular occurrence with customers coming in to ask for their alarm to be disconnected because it is draining the battery. On checking the car out more often than not the battery drain is caused by something else and the alarm is only doing what it should do.

It may be worth getting you car checked by an auto electrician looking for a battery drain.|||find the fuse and take it out.|||Its not the alarm that is draining the battery like that. IT may be a bad battery, or you may some some kind of parasitic drain the the car that is dischargin your battery. Even the brand new Volvos (which have a ton more electronic parasitic draw than your 1994) can last about a week without being started before they will need a jumpstart. Get your battery tested, and if it checks out ok, take the car to a mechanic and tell them your problem and they will be able to help you. Hope this helps.|||I wouldnt disable it...sounds like you have a short somewhere. I would suggest taking it in and having the short traced and repaired.

Sometimes it could be as simple as a ground wire off or starting to come off.

But I would definatly have it checked before going to disabling these things.|||its prob not the alarm!!!!!!!! matter of fact i'm almost positive, and if you disable the alarm, it could make it not start. just go get yourbattery tested first

If you take the plastic air duct off that sits on top of the injector (3 bolts), you'll see the injector body. It looks very much like a carburettor. As you look down, you'll see the throttle body opening, and a round item directly in front of it with the fuel flow %26amp; return pipes leading away towards the passenger side of the car. This round bit is the fuel pressure regulator.

Replacement should be self explanatory if you have a new one to look at, but you'll need to depressurise the fuel system first - pull the fuel pump fuse with the engine running until it stalls. It's best to remove the injector body from the car to work on it.

Are Volvo cars expensive to repair and maintain?

My wife and I need a new ride, and we are in the market right now. We are considering different vehicles. I was in a serious car accident ten weeks ago, and so we want a safe and reliable vehicle. I personally want to get this local 1995 Chevy Blazer. My wife is interested in a 2000 Volvo S70. Are Volvos expensive to repair and maintain? Which vehicle should we purchase? The Blazer has 117K miles on it, and the Volvo has 210,000 miles on it.|||have the vehicle checked out by a mechanic before you buy|||All European cars are expensive to repair and maintain. The good thing about the Volvo is it has a very good reliability rating so it doesn't need to be repaired very often.

With that being said I would be very cautious about ANY car with 210,000 miles. That's a lot of miles for a car no matter how old it is. All sorts of things start breaking when they get that much use.

The Blazer will obviously be cheaper to repair. And since it's a 16 year old high mileage Chevy it will require a lot more maintenance then the Volvo so the repair costs over a three or four year period will probably even out between the two cars.

I would look for a low mileage Volvo S60 or even a V70 AWD wagon. They aren't expensive to buy and they drive great. I loved my Volvo. Too bad some fool rear ended me and totaled the car. Of course since it was Volvo I never got a scratch on me.|||well the blazers have poor crash test rating for front impact. the volvo is a foriegn made car so it will cost more for parts and to maintain. the chevy you can put gmc or other chevy parts onto it if anything breaks as most chevys has parts that match different makes. if the volvo has 210k miles that a lot for a 2000 like i have a 1996 chevy blazer it only has 240k miles and it had a lot of travelling done with it. overall i think your best choice would be the blazer it may not have as good of crash test rating but its bigger, easy to work on and cheap to maintain|||Forget those two choices: money pits at best, then there's the safety issue.

Did the 1995 Volvo 850 GLT have an alternate set of rear brakes to act as the parking brake?

I have a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT and I recently drove about a half mile with the parking brake on. Will that damage the car in any way? Also, did the 850 GLT have an alternate set of rear brakes that acted as the parking brake?|||Yes, as do most Volvo models of this vintage. I doubt your emergency brake shoes or rotors were damaged. If they were damaged, you would have heard a loud grinding which would indicate the brake material wearing down to the metal brake shoe and contacting the metal brake rotor.|||Maybe and yes. The e-brake shoes are adjustable.

Why does a volvo s80 t6 have terrible suspension?

I purchased a 2003 volvo s80 t6 with 120 000 kms on the clock. Soon i noticed that the car seemed to rattle and it has a hard suspension. The car does not handle or feel like a prestige car. The noise it makes on the road surface is irritating. Is this common to these cars?|||The stiff suspension is a by-product of handling so you can feel the road better,

The rattling is probably your sway bar link rods or your strut mount bushings and bearings.

another common suspension issue on these is the control arm bushings.

One last unrelated thing check your timing belt for cracks.|||I don't know what some of these people are talking about, but they must have owned some pretty crappy cars if they think suspension failure is part of normal wear and tear with such low mileage. All of my Volvos have been more than a decade old with over 100k miles and never had to have suspension work done. The suspension on the '89 got sqeaky and soft approaching 200k miles, but that was it. If your Volvo is making clunking noises and you don't feel it's riding properly, something suspension related is probably worn out. Don't take it to the dealership. Find a good independent shop that does suspension work. I hope for your sake its something silly and cheap.|||An S80 T6 does not have terrible suspension. If it rattles and doesn't handle properly it means some of the suspension components are worn. This is common with ANY car. There are links, joints and bushings that will wear over time.

Just looks like you got taken and bought a car without checking it out first.

Someone else mentioned shocks (struts), and they are wrong. It's very uncommon to have to replace shocks. However, it is common to replace normal wear items like control arm bushings, sway bar links, spring seats (strut mounts) ,etc, all of which can make noise and affect handling.|||So-called "performance" car with associated stiff suspension? Think about it. As for the rattles, that's Volvo's crappy engineering and shoddy assembly.|||Volvos commonly have the struts give out which causes the ride to be rough and noisy. Visit a suspension or a brake service place. I think it will cost you about 1000 though, so look around.

Is their a Volvo service from shirdi to nagpur ?

Any suggestions for discolored leather seats on a Volvo?

I left my sunroof open overnight and it rained. My leather seats on my Volvo are now discolored and have hardened! Any advice on how to help/fix this problem is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!|||There are many leather conditioner available over the counter you may try on that to soften the leather, others uses isopropyl alcohol, but be careful most of the alcohol may cause discolored of your leader, so I suggest to use conditioner instead, for discolored leather you may apply leather paint, which you can find in shoe store.|||Lots of good stuff out there. Go talk to some body that works with leather, (shoe repair) You don't have to rely on "car" products. I use shoe polish on my leather jackets, once it dries in, it doesn't smear. You can help get them a bit softer by using a leather treatment, but the color loss is permanent.

How can I hear the turbo on my volvo 850 glt?

How can I hear the turbo on my volvo 850 glt would I have to do something to the blow off valve?|||First thing is remove the factory compressor bypass valve ( aka CBV, located on the turbo housing cold side) and repalce it with a blanking plate (can be brought online) this allows the full boost pressure to be vented to the atmosphere through a blow off valve (BOV or pop off valve). A blow of valve that has a large trumpet should be purchased and fitted to maximise the sound.

If you were after the turbo spooling up sound and turbo flutter you can replace the air box and ducting with a short section of pipe and a pod filter, with the spring tension on the blow off valve tightened to keep the blow off valve closed longer a reverse pulse of charged air reflects off the closed throttle plate and gets chopped up as it enters the turbine compressor wheel giving an awesome flutter sound (search youtube "dose pipe" to listen to the sound) this slows the turbine and some would argue shortens the lifespan of the turbo, but I dont agree with that.

Well hope this helps.. Theres nothing like the sound of a boosting turbo :-)|||Roll down the windows and drive next to a wall or through a tunnel. Modulate the throttle so the turbo spools and slows, you will hear it. Why you want to hear it, makes me wonder. Drive next to a semi truck with the window down and its turbo will blow your ears out!|||Why do you want to?

What to do to boost performance on 1996 Volvo 850 non turbo?

what are some things i could do to boost the performance of my volvo? More horse power etc..I know about changing the air filter or intake or something...but what are some good brand names and types that i would want?|||Well, unfortunately, there isn't much to do for an n/a 850. The most you can do is an exhaust, chip, and intake ending up with about 200hp. If you get an 850 Turbo. Then you can make over 300hp with those same mods.

What makes 2001 Volvo S60 show 'low battery voltage' and the battery to stop charging?

My 2001 Volvo S60 is perpetually showing "Low Battery Voltage" and the battery is no longer charging. I have gone through 2 batteries already and I don't know what to do next. Please help!|||Sounds like you have an alternator issue. Either the voltage regulator is bad (which is the case most of the time) or the whole alternator is bad. You can change the voltage regulator by itself if that is the problem. Or you can just change the whole alternator. They can sometimes be about the same amount of work to do, because on certain models it's hard to get to the regulator with the alternator in the vehicle. So if you take it out you can just change the whole alternator.

But have the charging system tested first to find out the exact problem.|||if you have put 2 batteries in you have wasted money already. you need to have your alternator checked. sounds like it is bad if it is not working and charging your battery properly you will be running just off battery power. i would say its a part time problem. but have it checked!|||I think you're alternator isn't working properly, and it's killing your batteries.

What you can do is go to Auto Zone, they do free electrical system checks.

How do you remove the power steering pump and alternator on a M reg Volvo 440 1.9 TD?

I was driving my Volvo and suddenly the steering went very heavy and the engine cut out. I managed to re-start the car but then the steering went very light and the engine cut out. The engine also squeaks when it is running. My dad narrowed the problem down to the power steering pump or the alternator, but we can't work out how to remove them. I can't afford to take the car to a garage, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!|||I might recommend a repair manual ( Haynes, Mitchell, or Chilton's) are all good manuals. You can pick one up at your local auto parts store for about $25.00. Any of these manuals will give you step by step instructions on not only how to replace the parts but also how to test them and make sure there bad. This way your not throwing away your money on guesses of what the problem might be. A real must have for the one who likes to do it themselves. Well worth the money. GOOD LUCK!!!|||I don't really understand how a faulty power steering pump or alternator would make the car cut out. The squeal could be a slipping belt, but the steering would be heavy, not light, and the engine would still run fine. Get yourself a Haynes manual - removal of either the alternator or pump are straightforward %26amp; only involve a couple of bolts each. It's a Peugeot engine, so any manual covering Peugeot 205/306/309/405 diesel, Renault 1.9 diesel or Citroen 1.9 diesel will do.|||first take the belt(s) off and spinn all the pulleys by hand to make sure there is not a seizing problem. If the power steering pulley is seized or tight when spinning the pulley, it will not work and cause a load on the engine which can cause stalling. if it is smooth and easy to spin and no bearing noise, then it may be the pump. or if the pump, hose(s) or rack is leaking fluid, it will fry quick when the reservoir is empty. check for leaks, pulley bearing problems and fluid /level and color. If you can't verify the pump is the problem, it may be better to have a shop diagnose it.

How does the turbo work on a 2000 volvo s40? If it does not work, does it affect the rest of the engine?

I just recently bought a 2000 volvo s40 and I was wondering if anyone knows how the turbo works. It doesn't seem to be THAT fast of a car, but it seems to go faster at higher RPMs. I also read somewhere that it is a low pressure turbo. Might that have something to do with it? Also, if the turbo on one of these cars does not work, does it affect the rest of the engine?|||Engines work by combusting fuel - the two elements to that are oxygen and gasoline. Oxygen is the limiting factor in the reaction. This has the effect of both robbing the engine of potential power and emitting more polutants (CO, for instance).

A turbocharger is a fan that forces more air, and consequently more oxygen into the cylinder. The fan is turned by exhaust gases; at low engine speeds, exhaust gas flow is low and fan interia is high, so the fan turns slowly, and the turbocharger does little, if anything at all. This is what is referred to as turbo lag, and is perfectly normal. Some manufacturers use 2 smaller fans which are easier to get turning to reduce this lag. What you are describing - a seemingly exponential increase in power as RPM climb - is perfectly normal.

One downside to turbocharging is that the entire engine is under pressure. This takes a toll on all the seals and hoses. The more air that is forced into the engine, the greater power that can be achieved. Turbo engines that run closer to the edge of blowing out hoses, etc are high pressure turbos. Typically a low pressure turbo, like yours will run around 7 psi over atmostpheric pressure.

Typically, you'll hear an increasingly loud whining sound from the turbos before they go kaput. If the fans do seize, you're basically back to running a normally aspirated engine, albeit with a somewhat restricted air intake. Your biggest problem will be that the fuel injection system is programmed for the turbos, so you're going to be running rich and emitting a lot more incompletely combusted fuel, and you may wind up ruining your cats (which are expensive to replace).|||Usually if there is something wrong with the turbo the engine won't run or runs poorly. they are controlled by a computer and waste gate that limits the boost :(

there is a lot of info in this group|||turbos work from the exhaust gasses.

i have limited experience with bad turbos, but all sound like the engine is trying to come apart when going out.

usually it is the bearings that fail because of the hi temp and revs they work under.|||As a volvo tech I've seen very few volvo turbos fail. When they do fail it is usually the oil seal. When that fails it'll smoke at idle after it is warm. The best way to test if it is making pressure short of a pressure gauge is put it in second at a lower rpm around 1500. Then put the gas to the floor. Between 2000 and 4000 you'll feel the car noticable gain power. If the turbo isn't making pressure it won't hurt anything.

What are the procedures to to change the brake fluids on a Volvo S60 2002?

What are the procedures to to change the brake fluids on a Volvo S60 2002?|||The easiest and quickest way is to have someone pump the brakes while you open the bleed valve at each brake caliper. Put a clear hose over the end of the valve to catch the old fluid into a container and make sure you put in fresh fluid all the while into the brake fluid reservoir. You will know when you have entirely fresh fluid in the system. It will not have the yellow tinge that the old fluid will have.

Contrary to what one person answered, yes you do need to change the fluid at the recommended intervals. Brake fluid deteriorates over time.|||I prefer to use a pressure bleeder. There are a few kinds, but the important thing is the it does a better job of removing all the fluid. My advice is that even though you can do all of the other maintenance on your own vehicle, this is best left up to a shop if you don't have a pressure bleeder.|||I don't think you have to change the fluid.

Just add brake fluid.

How hard is it to install a master cylinder on a 1993 Volvo with turbo? Im a girl so I need details.?

I just got this Volvo for $700, I love it and want to fix it up. I need to learn how to install a master cylinder, any help is greatly appreciated.|||The Volvo master cylinder should not be too difficult to change. You will need a number of mechanical tools like wrenches, sockets and screwdrivers. You should buy a new or rebuilt master cylinder before you start dis-assembly of the old one. As you take things apart, put the nuts, washers, and little pieces in a box or tray so you can be sure to put things back together correctly. When you have changed out the old M.C. you must add brake fluid and bleed the entire system of air. I have a 1989 Volvo 760 Turbo. I am having a hard time finding a repair manual to show me how to replace my master cylinder for my brakes. Anybody got a site or at least some pointers on how to replace the master cylinder? I've already bled the brakes correctly and have diagnost the problem correctly.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!|||If you can bleed your brakes you can do this. Usually the MC is bolted to the power booster via two studs on the booster. Just unbolt the MC, disconnect your brake lines and you should be ok. Bolt the new one on, fill it with new brake fluid and bleed the brakes, just keep in mind that since you're disconnecting the lines the air bubbles are way up in the lines so it may take some time, and a lot of brake fluid, to bleed them correctly.

Good luck to ya...

p.s. If you didn't already know, start with the tire furthest from the MC then move to the next closest one, etc.|||Honestly, if you've got to ask, then you shouldnt be doing them. Remember, its your BRAKES. When those are done wrong accidents happen. Dont let that be you. Take it to a shop.

How many ohms are in a Volvo Penta B30 ignition resistor?

It goes Solenoid, resistor then distributor. I need a resistor for my motor and need the right resistor with the right ohms. Its a volvo penta B30 6 cylinder marine motor 170AQ. The resistor says made in Germany but I just need the ohms and would buy one in america if possible.|||its a 0 .75 Ohms resistor , just go to any Auto Parts store and buy a sealed Ignition Ballast resistor. Then check to make sure your only getting 8 volts out.

by the way Ignition Ballast Resistors are not color coded

Is it possibly to bring a Volvo V60 into the states?

Hi - I was wondering if you are able to buy a 2011/2012 Volvo V60 from outside of the united states and have it brought to the united states? Is that allowed? Thanks.|||YOur biggest issue will be regestration and emissions. You're obviously gona have to figure out how the paper work process works and going through customs. which may end up costing you a lot of money. But the biggest worry is then smogging it and keeping it passing smog tests.

In california for example, emission requirments are big/high so this volvo would not pass. When someone gets a car from the factory or through the european delivery program, thwy tell the dealer/factory center that they "have intent to register in the united states (be specific what state it will be in because each state has its own requirments)" THat way they will install the proper engine management system, catalytic converter and oxygen sensors to match the federal government requirments so you are able to register it. You can also look into an "out of state emissions pass" but it may be hard to get/be a temprorary thing/not offered by all states.

Just get the all new Saab 9-5 sports combi (wagon). such a sick and awesome car. Beats the volvo.|||Sure, but it will cost a lot of money to deal with customs and shipping. Contact US customs or a Volvo dealer to get on the right track for info.

What is wrong with my 1988 volvo 740 gle wagon's fuel line?

I have a 1988 volvo 740 gle wagon and when accelerate my car dies. I just had the fuel filter replaced at oil can henerys and that seemed to make it worse. I don't know what's wrong. It will turn on and idle but when I push on the gas it revs a little bit then dies. Does anybody know what could be wrong?|||I doubt it is the fuel line. Those are symptoms of a bad MAF sensor, which the 740 does not use at idle. You can confirm that by unplugging the MAF sensor (right near the air cleaner). With the sensor unplugged the power should be way down but it should not stall. The MAF connector is a big trouble spot, too. You can clean the connector with isopropyl alcohol (shellac thinner) on a cotton swab.

New MAFs are pretty expensive. If you go with a wrecking yard sensor, be sure to get the right type. One type has an adjustment; the other one does not.|||You may want to check your actual hose,,,,the fuel line...It may be so old that the hose itself is wearing down and the rubber is worn out from age and perhaps non use. When is the last time you actually drove this car?

Good luck !|||I agree with Michael , when repacing Mass air flow sensor if the heat risor tube is still connected replace the air box thermostat at the same time. I still honestly would still take fuel psi readings also just for precaution
