How does the hatch on a 99 Volvo V70 stay up?

I just bought a 99 Volvo V70 wagon. The hatch lift mechanism is barely holding. Unlike taditional hatchbacks, ther are no visible hydraulics. I assume there are small hydraulics under the interior panels? Springs?|||They hydraulic rods are behind the panels on both sides running along the roof. When they leak you can sometimes see staining on the panels.|||I have a 99 V70 and I my hatch will only stay up if my car is perfectly level.
