How much would it cost to have a 1992 volvo repaired to pass a smog test?|||Like everyone says, it's almost impossible to guess without knowing more. There are, however, some things you can do to enhance your chances. These would include;

1) if it's already failed, read the reponse carefully. It will usually contain information leading you to what was the specific concern.

2) it can't have any "check engine light" or other diagnostic codes visible

3) have a tune up performed. Worn plugs can contribute to excess unburned fuel in the exhaust, causing the car to fail. The other steps in a tune up can also help; checking the oxygen sensor (if it has one). This should be a quality tune up, including new plugs, and timing the engine.

4) change the oil. Oil that has been diluted by fuel can leak fuel fumes into the engine through the PCV valve, in theory causing a richer exhaust. Fuel in exhause = failure.

5) NOx; another emissions tested. This one is tough to minimize. You'll need working catalytic converters. NOx can be elevated due to buildup on the back side of the valves, causing higher compression and generating more NOx. Best cheap advice; use a quality fuel additive to reduce the valve build up, run premium fuel to the test, and go in on a cool, humid day. High humidity drops NOx emissions up to 30%

6) your car should be warmed up when you take it there; cold engines blow more emissions.

7) here is a good fuel additive that is designed to help pass an emissions test, reduce deposits, and increase fuel economy up to 5.7% http://bit.ly/Amsoil-PI|||It can add up fast. I can not give you an exact number because you didn't say whats wrong with it.|||And how deep is my pond? C`mon dude. How are we supposed to know when we don`t even have any idea what`s wrong with it? Give us a break here. I would guess , more than a 28 year old car is worth. Just a guess, This thing could be a jewel in the rough, or on its way to the scrappers. We have no idea. Sorry if you take offense, but you gave us nothing to work with.|||Just ask the guy with the mid-90's audi quattro. Murder-riffic! I don't understand why people still drive these cars that get 15 miles to a gallon (probably less), buy a friggin used focus and you'd make up the purchase price on the car via gas mileage in about a year and a half, if that.
